Remember in addition to cheap flights on an African safari airline, you may fly for free too! Today, almost all of the major airlines in the US, Canada, the UK and Europe belong to one of the major airline alliances. So if you have frequent flyer miles you should see if you can get a free African safari airline ticket to Africa.

Remember there are two ways to have accumulated these points or miles.

One way is if you fly a lot. The second way to have frequent flier points is because you use certain credit cards a lot. So you may have more points at your disposal than you think!

South African Airways, Kenya Airways and Ethiopian Airlines are the airlines with the best networks in Africa. Unless you travel a lot in Africa you are unlikely have many points in their frequent flyer programs. Fortunately, however most airlines belong to one of the major airline alliances.

South African Airways belongs to the Star Alliance, the other two (Kenya Airways & Ethiopian Airlines) don't belong to an alliance. (Though KLM owns a big share of Kenya Airways.) We have given you a free guide to what airlines belong to what alliances.

One benefit of the alliances is that if your airline does not fly directly to South Africa (Johannesburg, Cape Town), Kenya (Nairobi), Tanzania (Arusha – Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam) or Namibia (Windhoek) one of its airline alliance partners should.

If you have enough points, then you have a good chance of using your frequent flier points to get a free flight to South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Victoria Falls or Namibia to go on your safari.

Here is what you have to do to get the free flights:

  • find your airline you have frequent flyer points with,
  • see what alliance it belongs to
  • contact them and tell them you want to use your frequent flier points to get to Johannesburg, Cape Town, Windhoek, Nairobi, Dar es Salaam or Arusha.

It’s as simple as that! We’ll meet you at one of these airports and take you on your safari.

Our Top Tips For The Best African Safari Airline For Travelers By Region You Are Traveling From

Free Or Cheap African Safari Airline Flights From USA Or Canada

Only three airlines fly directly to Africa from the US – Delta, Ethiopian Airlines and South African Airways, (United codeshares with South African Airways). But your favorite airline may let you use your frequent flier points to get there, you’ll just have to fly on one of their alliance partners.

Here is an example of how you can use the below chart. American Airlines doesn’t fly to Africa but its partner British Airways does. So if you have enough miles with American you may be able to use them for a flight to Johannesburg or Cape Town or Nairobi for example.

Free Or Cheap African Safari Airline Flights From UK and Europe

Many airlines fly from Europe to Africa. Watch out for special deals, especially during the off season. Most of Africa is a year round destination so you should be able to have a wonderful safari for a fraction of the high season cost.

Free Or Cheap African Safari Airline Flights From Australia and New Zealand

Qantas is the dominant carrier, but if you have the time and the points don’t forget to look at Singapore, United, Air Malaysia amongst others. The Asian based carriers have several periods when they have a lot of empty seats on flights from their hubs to Africa. So you may be able to use those frequent flier points fairly easily.

Free Or Cheap African Safari Airline Flights From Japan, China, India, Singapore and the Rest Of Asia

Best advice is to get a good fare to a major hub – Hong Kong, Singapore, for example. Then check out low season specials. Using frequent flier miles is a good bet since on many of the airlines legs to Africa from Asia have several periods when they have a lot of empty seats on flights from their hubs to Africa. So the frequent flier seats should be available!

Free Or Cheap African Safari Airline Flights From South America

The connections between Africa and South America are poor but getting better with SAA offering more service. Going through Europe will offer you the chance to get a discounted fare to Europe or to Europe via the USA and then save by flying from one of the European hubs into Africa.

South African Airways, Varig and Air Malaysia fly from Africa to South America.
