Discover The Best African Wildlife Safari Parks - Botswana's Top 3
Botswana has three outstanding African wildlife safari parks: - the Okavango Delta
- Chobe National Park
- Moremi Wildlife Refugee
All three of these African wildlife safari areas are simply unparalleled. If you can only take one African wildlife safari in your life, you should strongly consider Botswana. It is exceptional in every way - diversity of game, numbers of animals, uniquely beautiful settings. And increasingly rare, African wildlife safari spaces that are vast and unspoiled. Here’s more on the Top 3 Botswana African Wildlife Safari Parks Chobe National Park The most prominent feature of the Chobe National Park is the huge concentration of elephants -- thought to be one of the highest concentrations of elephants in the world. But it is not only the elephants that make this a very special African wildlife safari park worth visiting, it also has the astounding natural beauty. This African wildlife safari park has an amazing variety of habitats, ranging from floodplains, baobab, and mopane trees and acacia woodlands, to verdant flood grasslands and thickets bordering the Chobe River. Flowing along the parks northern boundaries are the Linyanti and Chobe Rivers, while in the south the Savuti Channel brings life to the Mababe Depression. Over and above the elephants, the Chobe National Park has an amazing variety of game, and many brilliantly colored birds. The Savuti Channel, a strange waterway, which apparently seems to have a mind of its own, bisects the Chobe National Park. This unusual waterway was dry for one hundred years, but then flooded abruptly in the 1950's and remained flooded till the 1980's, when shifts of the subterranean tectonic plates caused it to dry up again. This pristine wildlife reserve offers an undisturbed wilderness experience and is one of the country's great draw cards. Chobe is huge; stretching across various habitats like the lovely Savuti marshes and the fossilized dunes near the Mababe Depression. The riverfront makes for excellent game viewing, bird-watching and river cruises, but the Savuti in the south is also popular, especially at the start of the rainy season when thousands of zebras, wildebeest and buffalo migrate to its waters. Okavango The Okavango Delta is unique. It is the largest inland delta in the world, instead of flowing into the sea, the annual flood of fresh water flows inland from Angola, spreading over 16 000km² of the Kalahari sand in a maze of lagoons and channels. The countless islands that emerge from its waterways give rise to several diverse ecosystems which in turn, are home to vast numbers of game and birds. This African wildlife safari park is a birder's paradise. This popular attraction is at its most impressive in August when the champagne-colored water is at its deepest. Most of the young are born between November and March when the vegetation is lush. The heart of the delta is accessed by air only and as it is an exclusive destination, it remains relatively unpopulated and wild.Moremi Moremi has been described as one of the most beautiful places in Africa. This African wildlife safari area is situated in the Okavango Delta in a watery wilderness of reed islands and waterways. There is a profusion of game and birdlife -- gliding silently past the wildlife in a mokoro (dugout canoe) is an unforgettable experience. Apart from lion, elephant, zebras, giraffe and many others, keep an eye out for rare and unusual antelope like the red lechwe and sitatunga. A number of camps are set on the water's edge and offer the ultimate romantic and idyllic break away. In the center of the Okavango Delta this paradise was proclaimed a wildlife reserve by the Tswana people in 1963. Moremi is undoubtedly one of the world's most pristine wilderness areas. (The Tswana people are the majority in Botswana.) Their foresight has ensured that nature's web has flourished undisturbed, offering a glimpse of the divine, a veritable Garden of Eden. Moremi is a place of lily-covered wetlands, grass plains and forests, where even at the busiest time of year you're likely to be the only spectators at the most dramatic animal sighting. Moremi consists of a network of waterways surrounding two large islands, Chiefs Island in the west and Mopane Tongue in the east. The area's diverse ecosystems, riverine woodland, flood plains, wetlands and reed beds, mopane forest and dry savannah woodland are all flourishing, broken only by the occasional jeep track. This diversity of habitats provides rich pickings for an impressive variety of animals and around 550 bird species. As Moremi is a fenced reserve, game viewing is impressive throughout the year. However, the cool dry winter months from to March to September are an ideal time to visit, as you are practically guaranteed sightings of lion, elephant, leopard, hyena, eland, kudu, roan antelope, giraffe, zebra, impala and buffalo. On the sandy riverbanks and wetlands, sightings of hippos and crocodiles are commonplace. Moremi is accessed either by air or road via Maun, Botswana's tourism capital. However, the maze of sandy roads which take you to Moremi South Gate deteriorate once inside the reserve, varying from deep sandbanks to potholed detours. A self-drive through Moremi is really only advisable for experienced 4x4 drivers and in the dry months. There are three serviced campsites in the reserve, these are unfenced and as the animals frequently prowl for scraps in the dead of night. Thus you will definitely feel that you are in the heart of wildest Africa. For the less adventurous Moremi is best seen by vehicle safari and boat trips from the luxury lodges within the reserve.
