We moved to South Africa as a family in 1993, and to Cape Town in 2007. My wife is a local South African. Since moving here we have visited Cape Town often in winter(and now have lived through one), and each year it is the same story:
South Africa tours
in winter get great deals. And this is especially true for visitors to Cape Town in winter. Great deals abound.
Cape Town accommodation occupancy levels drop dramatically in winter. Though winter is when it rains in Cape Town, you do get times of glorious sunshine and it is a verdant city during this time. Winter is also the best time for whale watching and for seeing the great white sharks.
Cape Town is a coastal city with a Mediterranean climate. Ringed by mountains and bounded by the sea, its average maximum temperatures are 80 degrees F/27 degrees C in summer. In winter, it rains in Cape Town and there can be gale force winds. However it can also have beautiful sunny days. Lows are in the 40’s at night (7 degrees C) and in the 60s in the day (17 degrees C).
And remember South Africa’s (and Cape Town’s) winter also happens to be the best time for South African safaris so there are great reasons to go on your South Africa tour during winter.
You can also spend your time in the Cape Wine Lands where it is both warmer and drier then it is in Cape Town city itself. So don’t be too put off by Cape Town weather in winter, just come prepared to have layers of clothing.
