Want a free Garden Route Map of South Africa to discover this splendid lake & coastal area of South Africa?
You've come to the right place!

Answers to your questions about where to go. Superb deals on car rentals so you can explore on your own with these self drive routes.

Since we moved to South Africa in 1993 we have enjoyed the beautiful Garden Route many times. We now live in Cape Town which can be where you can either start the Garden Route or end it.

If you want to take advantage of low prices then coming in the winter is an excellent idea since the weather is dry and sunny virtually all winter long. Remember winter in the Southern Hemisphere are the months of June, July, & August.

And if you are a nature lover remember winter is the peak of the whale watching season!

4 Day/ 3 Night Self Drive Garden Route Itinerary - Port Elizabeth To Cape Town

Day 1 - Port Elizabeth / Knysna

Travel through the indigenous Tsitsikamma Forest towards the romantic seaside resort of Knysna in the heart of the famous Garden Route, with scenic stops along the way.

Dinner and overnight in Knysna.

Approximate travel time: 6 Hours

Day 2 - Knysna

Today take a cruise on the vast Knysna Lagoon and visit the famous Featherbed Nature Reserve. Admire the view of The Heads, two majestic rock cliffs which protect the lagoon's entrance from the pounding Indian Ocean. After lunch board yet another mode of transport - a steam train. The quaint Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe is by far the best way to journey between Knysna and George. Relish the old world timber and leather of the carriages as we puff past the Garden Route's dense woodland and pretty coves; pierce dark tunnels and rattle over high bridges.

Overnight in Knysna

Day 3 - Drive through the spectacular Outeniqua Pass to Oudtshoorn

Known as the 'Feather Capital of the World' because of its huge ostrich industry. Here learn more about these strange flightless birds during a tour of an ostrich farm. After lunch visit the hauntingly beautiful Cango Caves, one of South Africa's foremost natural wonders.

Overnight in Oudtshoorn. Approximate travel time: 5 Hours

Day 4 - Hermanus and Cape Town

A day of magnificent vistas. Enjoy the ever-changing passing canvass as you travel through Calitzdorp, Barrydale and the Tradouw Pass to Swellendam and then on to the seaside village of Hermanus. The entire village pays tribute to the Southern Right Whales which frolic off-shore (June to November only). As you emerge over Sir Lowry's Pass, Cape Town beckons in the distance.

Overnight: Cape Town Approximate travel time: 7 Hours
