South Africa is the center of a marvelous Indian and Atlantic Ocean Whale Route. Each year Southern Right whales migrate into the coastal waters of South Africa's Western Cape to calve and nurse their young. The animals, often just meters from the shore, provide unsurpassed whale watching opportunities between June and November.

In South Africa you can whale watch in many places. Here are some:

  • False Bay near Cape Town
  • Hermanus – an hour outside of Cape Town
  • Plettenberg Bay along the Garden Route

Humpbacks migrate through the region as early as May and as late as December each year, while Bryde's whales are found slightly further offshore all year round.
The above are the most easily accessed spots. But the Whale Route starts along the south of Cape Town and extends to Durban, 1,200 plus miles of coastline away. Then it extends further north along Mozambique's coast where manta rays, whale sharks and several more types of dolphins flourish. This is a whale watcher's paradise.
