We have been on over 80 African safaris since we moved to South Africa in 1993. My wife is a local and often we fly, get a cheap car rental in Cape Town for example, and head out to explore South Africa’s southern national parks. But there are literally scores of national parks and even more private game reserves to explore!

In Southern Africa, it's easy to explore on your own! In South Africa & Namibia the roads are great. And because most of the national parks have caravan and camping sections, you can plan an overland safari on your own by creating a circuit of South African national parks & Namibian national parks.

Kruger National Park is the best example of what you can do. Inside Kruger National Park is high quality, low cost accommodation of varying levels of amenities. One option is serviced outlet points where you can camp, have ablution facilities and have very low rates.

The parks mainly serve the local South African market who come into Kruger during the school holidays and some South African public holidays. At such times, accommodation in the rest camps is very hard to get.

The exact timing of the school holidays change from year to year. This means that you must reserve as soon as you know your dates. As I noted earlier there is a range of accommodation options, from caravan options to simple tenting options to chalets with indoor baths and kitchens to more luxurious cottages that belong to South African companies but which the Park rents out when the companies aren’t using them.

So if you want to take a break from the overland rigors, you can “splurge”.
