When my daughter was nine we went on one of the most unique African adventure safari we have ever done. We did combination horse safari and Africa hiking safari. The setting was one of the most beautiful and pristine parts of South Africa. It is aptly named "The Wild Coast".

We took my nephew and he did the African horse safari while we hiked. Whether you are a beginner or skilled rider, the horse trails are guided at a pace that encourages low impact on the natural environment.

But it offers you the chance to absorb all that this incredible area has to offer – the beaches, the dunes, the forests, the estuaries, the streams, the African culture . The only reason Maya (my daughter) and I hiked was because Maya didn’t want to ride. She had had a horse riding accident a few months previously.

This whole African safari experience was part of a trip we took National Public Radio’s Living on Earth program on. Steve Curwood, the program’s host, came with 16 of his listeners on this trip. We had to travel in two groups but we met all meet up at night.

It was a wonderful experience - a journey into the wilderness, landscape, culture and history of the beautiful Wild Coast. Maya and I think it is a great family adventure vacation and small group adventure trip.

One wonderful surprise was that we all got to interact directly with the African tribal people. Since the Wild Coast is in a traditional Xhosa part of South Africa (Xhosa is the tribe that Nelson Mandela ) belongs to.

"I never knew of a morning in Africa
when I woke that I was not happy"

Ernest Hemingway

Over 4 days we traversed 25 miles of the most glorious coastline on horse,

by foot and crossed and paddled up rivers and streams in canoes & kayaks. It was a leisurely and comfortable pace. Lots of time for swimming in the warm Indian Ocean, wading into tidal pools, watching African fishermen, playing with star fish…

This is eco tourism and adventure in its purest form. The facilities and services are provided and owned by self- employed African tribal people individuals in the form of micro-enterprises. This is the basis of the trail. Your participation assists in developing sustainable and responsible eco-tourism focused on community ownership.

Like I said before, this is one of our favorite adventure safaris. But...

Here Are 7 Top Choices For An African Horse Safari

  • Kaapsehoop, Mpumalanga, South Africa

The rolling hills, steep escarpment and plantations offer varied riding opportunities and overnight trails are becoming increasingly popular. An African horse safari in Kaapsehoop offers superb scenery and the priviledge of riding among the wild horses.

  • Drakensberg Mountains, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

The foothills of the Drakensberg are ideal for adventures on horseback. Take an overnight African horse safari from Underberg up towards Lesotho and you can fish en route.

  • Paarl, Western Cape, South Africa

A novel way to experience the Cape Winelands and enjoy tastings en route.

Whether you are seeking mountain views, empty beaches or dense forests, there is a stable that meets your needs in the Cape. Trails lead everywhere from the rugged Peninsula to the dense canopy of the Knysna forest. There are options throughout the Garden Route. Trails in the winelands usually include tastings.

  • eZulweni, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
Go back in time to an area steeped in the history of the bloody battles of the Anglo-Boer War.

  • Nyika Plateau, Malawi

Big skies, open country and vast panoramas combine to make the Nyika plateau perfect riding country. Explore the remotest regions of this unspoiled wilderness following elephant trails among herds of game, down secluded steep-sided valleys and high escarpments, or gallop across the rolling hills of the plateau. A classic African horse safari!

Stunning scenery, game watching and magnificent plant life are part and parcel of these multi-day horse safaris.

  • Okavango Delta, Botswana

Exploring the Okavango swamps on horse or elephant is the stuff of dreams. So go wild exploring one of Africa's most pristine wildernesses. This is an African horse safari in one of the most game rich areas of Africa.

More accessible - only four hours from Johannesburg and easier on the pocket -- is riding in the Tuli Block, where you can spot game.

  • Lesotho

Horses are the best way to immerse yourself in Lesotho - a remote, harsh plateau of few roads but spectacular scenery and welcoming villagers.

The small, featureless Basotho pony is known for its sure-footedness (if that's a word!) and endurance -- essential qualities in this remote, mountain kingdom. Journeying by horse is undoubtedly the best way to see the country.

Moreover these journeys are very much community development successes, revenue from the treks go directly to the horse owners and accommodation providers.

More Riding In Lesotho - Pony Trekking

Those wishing to ride pony trails in a challenging, awe-inspiring environment should trek the Maluti Mountains in Lesotho -- the Kingdom of the Sky.
