Nearly half the size of Alaska, it is said that only a man from the moon would find the landscape of Namibia familiar. Here you will find an eerie, relentless world of canyons, rock and vast plains of sand, all lit by a bronze colored sun. Namibia is not a destination if you are in a hurry. Namibia's awesome regions are stunningly beautiful - Sosussvlei with the world's highest dunes, Damaraland with its ancient African tribes, the other worldly Skeleton Coast, the wild and wonderful Namib Desert. All will cause you to relax and savor life itself. World famous Etosha National Park is one of the best African safari parks. It is one of the world's greatest wildlife viewing locations. Set in a desert-like landscape. It is a huge salt pan with surrounding mopane woodland. Though it is dry and flat, the animals love it. There are 114 species of mammals and 340 bird species, as well as Africa's smallest animal, the Damara dik-dik and black-maned lions. At the start of the summer rainy season, thousands of zebras, wildebeest and giraffe come to the waterholes. Etosha is also an important breeding ground for flamingos, another reason why it is one of the best African safari parks. Ready to indulge yourself with a Namibia safari? Brief History & Namibia’s PeopleSouth Africa occupied the German colony of South-West Africa during World War I and administered it as a mandate until after World War II when it annexed the territory. In 1966 the Marxist South-West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) guerrilla group launched a war of independence for the area that was soon named Namibia, but it was not until 1988 that South Africa agreed to end its administration in accordance with a UN peace plan for the entire region. Independence came in 1990. Today Namibia is a republic with approximately 1.8 million people. The population is small but diverse: black 87.5%, white 6%, mixed 6.5%. About 50% of the population belongs to the Ovambo tribe and 9% to the Kavangos tribe; other ethnic groups are: Herero 7%, Damara 7%, Nama 5%, Caprivian 4%, Bushmen 3%, Baster 2%, Tswana 0.5%. These ethnic groups abound throughout this region. African tribal peoples and Europeans live all over the territory. Khoi San live in the south, Herero in the center and Ovambo in the north, each group speaking their own language and each group with its own attachment to the untamed environment called home.
