The Latest CDC Travel Immunizations For Africa
Here are the latest health standards and requirements for travel immunizations for sub-Saharan Africa. First I give you general guidelines. Then I give you links to the US government’s Centers for Disease Control. They have more detailed information then what I have summarized here. With regard to health standards and requirements for travel immunizations, Africa falls into two categories. - Category One: South Africa and Namibia where little or no precautions are necessary.
Most parts of South Africa are free of malaria. This includes Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, Pretoria, East London, Port Elizabeth and the Garden Route for example. In some parts of South Africa, including Kruger National Park, northern KwaZulu Natal, the border regions of South Africa’s Northwest and Northern Provinces, there is a risk of catching malaria. If you are visiting these areas, you need to take anti malaria pills (get your doctor’s advice on the best one for you), sleep under a mosquito net & use insect repellents. Malaria carrying mosquitoes are active between dusk and dawn so have on long sleeve shirts and long pants then. Also for South Africa and Namibia, yellow fever vaccination certificate is necessary if you’ve come from a country where the disease is endemic. For example, Kenya, Tanzania or tropical South America. If you are going to another African country first and need the yellow fever shot, remember that a yellow fever certificate only becomes valid ten days after you’ve had the shot. - Category Two: The rest of Africa where you need to pay much closer attention to travel immunizations.
