So what is the definition of a safari? The word "safari" is from Arabic and it means journey. Today it specifically refers to either a hunting or wildlife sightseeing journey in southern or East Africa.

My wife is a local and we've lived in South Africa as a family since 1993. We give you firsthand advice about sightseeing African safaris. Definition Of A Safari - What You Do On A Safari

With most safaris, game drives are the main activity.
These game drives are with an expert guide who has extensive experience and knowledge of the area, the animals, the flora and the interaction of animals. Most often you are in a game viewing vehicle – generally, an open back 4x4 in southern Africa & in a more enclosed vehicle in east Africa.

Most game viewing takes place early in the morning and late afternoon. This is when animals – especially predators like the big cats -- are most active. The rest of the day you relax.

You can take safaris or do safari activities that suit your interests, here are some to consider.

Bird Watching

If you are particularly interested in this, let your guide know. Also note that between October and March for example lots of migrant birds come to Southern Africa from Central Africa and Europe.

Water Based Safaris or Safari Activities - Canoe Safaris, Mokoro (traditional canoe in Botswana) & River Cruises

Viewing wildlife from the water is a wonderful way to game watch. Animals have a different sense of personal space while they are in water or if you are viewing them from the water. A mokoro is a traditional Botswana canoe used in the Okavango Delta. A person with a pole, stands in the boat with you and pushes you through the shallow water channels.
