If you want to find cheap flights to South Africa, Kenya or any where else in Africa then our top tip is to use consolidators.

Why?

It’s simple! Consolidators are essentially wholesalers that buy a huge number of airline tickets then resell them to the public. This is true for flights to Africa and other long haul and short haul destinations. The airlines give the consolidators a tremendous
discount on flights to Africa because of the volumes they buy. They can then resell to you. Most of the time they offer the best fare possible up to 85% off of the published airfares. This may be a substantial amount of money since many flights to Africa are normally expensive.

And this is why I was so excited to find the above search engine, it contains both consolidator fares for flights to Africa as well as the best deals on flights to Africa from the airlines themselves!

In the past, consolidator fares were generally only available if you were traveling from the USA. Though bucket shops in the UK perform a similar function - they too can help you find cheap flights to Africa.

If you are traveling from other countries to Africa you can still save on flights to Africa by using the search engine above and following some money saving guidelines.

Here are some additional tips on how you can save money no matter where you are traveling from. These tips apply to all classes of travel - first class, business class & economy. And they apply to flights to Cape Town, Johannesburg, Nairobi, South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania & other places in Africa.

  • Use Regional HubsIf you are flying to Southern Africa get a flight to Johannesburg, South Africa and book a regional flight from there. To find the lowest airfares from Johannesburg to the rest of Africa check out the South African Airways website since they have the most flights and are now very competitive with the low cost carriers.

If you are flying to West Africa, look into flights to Nairobi, Kenya and catch a regional flight from there. They are cheap and plentiful.

  • If flying from the USA or Canada, investigate flying via Europe
  • Look into flights from Europe to Africa (especially via London.
Often in off peak times of year - the US winter, and fall for example) flights to Africa are discounted. The same is true for the South African winter -- June through August. After you get your low cost flight from London, then add on a flight from the US.

This can work very well during the off-season when flights between Europe and the US are very inexpensive (November to mid-December and January to March).

  • Direct Flights from the USA
Direct flights from the US to Africa are usually more expensive than those via Europe. This is because you have far fewer airlines & thus far fewer airlines. Obviously these flights fill up more quickly. A few examples of direct flights include: Delta Airlines and South African Airways (United flies to South Africa via a code share flight with South African Airways)

Often both Delta and South African Airways will sell tickets to consolidators. So check our cheap flights to South Africa page – It has a search engine to help you find these fares from the USA.

Delta flies to Johannesburg, South Africa from Atlanta and SAA flies to both Cape Town and Johannesburg from New York, Washington DC, and soon will fly to South Africa from Chicago.

  • Look At Flying Through Countries With Historic Links To Africa
If you are flying from or via Europe, remember that most European countries that once had colonies in Africa still have fairly close ties to those new countries. And they have good airline connections from their capitals or leading business cities to these former colonies.

    Here are some examples:

  • UK – Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya
  • France – Senegal, Cote D’Ivoire
  • Germany – Namibia, Tanzania
  • Netherlands – South Africa
  • Italy – Ethiopia
  • Portugal – Angola, Mozambique

In brief, if you are looking for a flight to a West African country, use Paris as your hub. For East and Southern Africa most flights will go in and out of London.
