Mombasa hotels
are mainly along the beachfront and are thus almost exclusively leisure hotels. Thus, unless you are going in off season, it is strongly recommended that you reserve all your accommodation as far in advance as possible. This is because availability, especially during the peak season is at a premium (December after Christmas and early January).
Nairobi hotels
are used by both businessmen and tourists. Thus you can find better rates over the weekends than during the week. And since several hotels have resorts or safari lodges in their group, ask your tour operator or the hotel if you get a better rate if you go to that hotel group's safari lodge or beach resort. The hotel groups make most of their money from the Nairobi hotels, so they may be willing to negotiate. Don't assume you will get a deal though. It is best to know your rates because sometimes the rate can be higher. Having said this, it is worth investigating!
