Hout Bay and Simon's Town Kayaking Sea Tour Routes The Boulders Route hugs the coast from Long Beach, Simon's Town, meandering past the old harbor along the Seaforth, Boulders, Windmill and Fisherman's beaches and on to the distant Miller's Point, giving a choice of distances of up to ten kms and more. This route has it all - protected beaches and coves, a colorful harbor and historical town, diving and fishing, lazing in the warm water or close-up viewing of the endemic and endangered African penguin, Cape fur seals and in season, plentiful southern right whales. Best in Autumn when the southeaster dissipates, but also great in winter when the offshore winds flatten the sea and turn it an azure blue. In summer, paddling it limited to the vicinity of the harbor and nearby coves or, for the more experienced some exciting downwind runs. In the distance, the Cape of Good Hope (link Cape background page) beckons the more experienced and adventurous paddlers. In winter beware of blustery nor'westers. Coastal Kayak Trails also run short trips out of Three Anchor Bay. Grades 2-5. For your kayak contact -- Coastal Kayak Trails, Real Cape Adventures, Whalesong Sea Kayak - Garden Route
Knysna Lagoon and Plettenberg Bay Kayaking Sea Tour Routes The ancient Portuguese seafarers named Plettenberg Bay, Baya Formosa or "beautiful bay" when they discovered it. They must have thought they had stumbled into paradise. Perfectly located in the middle of the Garden Route (link Garden route), it is surrounded by the Tsitsikamma Mountains which create an unparalleled amphitheatre of nature. A kayaker's domain; the most popular route stretches from Main Beach, next to Beacon Island, to the Robberg Peninsula and along its edge towards its point. The route offers breathtaking views, regular encounters with dolphins, whales in season and seals. At times the water is warm and crystal-clear and Keurboom's lagoon with its gorge and montane forest spills into the bay. Plett is a year-round destination offering everything kayakers and sea lovers could desire. Nearby Knysna offers a large lagoon with its famous landmark, the Heads, the Featherbeds Nature Reserve and oysters galore. Grades 2-4. Cape St Francis, Port Elizabeth and Transkei Kayaking Sea Tour Routes Immortalized by Bruce Brown in his classic movie Endless Summer, St. Francis Bay has lost none of the charm that attracted those pathfinding surfers of yore, despite prolific urban development. It is possible to paddle from the defunct slipway in the corner of the bay to the point past the cleverly-developed port and still encounter an otter, or paddle on the estuary to a sea kayaker's bush camp. Summer brings beach weather, but also perpetual southeasters, so the cooler seasons are recommended for paddling. Further east toward Port Elizabeth, East London and beyond, coastal rivers like the Kowie at Port Alfred, offer delightful paddling on tranquil lagoons. Grade 2-4. For your kayak contact - Cape Adventures - KwaZulu Natal
Durban, Glenmore, Zinkwazi Kayaking Sea Tour Routes This is the perennial beach boy country where you can surf year-round wearing nothing but dad's old baggies. If you're nostalgic, don't miss Baron Stander's Surf Museum - he is the best display. Sea kayaking for recreational paddlers is limited to launching from aside Vetch's Pier. Enjoy watching a passenger line tower above you and your kayak as it negotiates the narrow passage into the harbor. Enjoy the reefs in the vicinity, catching some of the small swells running over them. Paddle towards Addington Beach and beyond past a unique slide atop stacked containers which allow you to slide straight into the surf. The city can be best viewed in the early morning or early evening when the lights come on. The new Waterfront development at the Bluff adds some attractions to this location and extends the route into the lagoon-based harbor and turn it, Sydney-style, into a showcase. Grade 2-5. Top Sea Kayaking Tour Routes - Namibia, Mozambique, Zanzibar & More
NamibiaWalvis Bay, Swakopmund, Luderitz Bay Kayaking Sea Tour Routes Pioneered by the desert queen, Jeanne Meinthies, the Pelican Point Route may well be the most popular commercial kayaking sea tour & route in sub-equatorial Africa. Go on a unique 4x4 journey to distant Pelican Point, on the far side of the Walvis Bay lagoon and paddle in the vicinity of the lighthouse near the seal colony. Giant pelican waddle nearby and flocks of flamingo blot out the sky. Cormorants, terns and gulls fill in the spaces in a desert backdrop which offers endless vistas in Africa's otherwise least-populated country. Nearby Swakopmund has a European feel with its prevailing German architecture and you can listen to an Oompah band while watching the waves roll in and the desert turn violet. To the south lies Luderitz Bay where small fjords offer a surprising array of routes and perhaps even an old diamond on the beach. Grades 3-5. MozambiqueVilancoulos, Bazaruto Archipelago Kayaking Sea Tour Routes Previously war-torn Mozambique is said to become a tourist giant of the African sub-continent. Vilancoulos offers a large lagoon with kilometers of safe shore-side paddling, and endless beach, a lush tropical backdrop with coconut palms and traditional dhows, ubiquitous coastal baobabs and luxury, traditional, thatched roof lodges. A local market and a large indigenous population add to this kaleidoscope. The Bazaruto Archipelago consisting of about 4 diverse islands, is within reach of experienced paddlers and offers plentiful dolphins and the odd dugong. The area may be too hot in summer for some, currents and high winds may make an island crossing treacherous and malaria is an ever-present threat. But paddling here remains a memorable tropical experience. Maputo Bay, Inhaca Island, Barra and Inhambane, to mention just a few offer additional paddling opportunities, some on unique mangrove-covered estuaries. Grade 2-4. MalawiCape Maclear and Dumba Island Routes Long advertised as the "friendly" heart of Africa, Malawi remains a peaceful place, typical African, a traveler’s retreat with a lake the size of an inland sea. The most rewarding diving and paddling area is along Cape Maclear where the water visibility can be 15 meters or more, fish nibble at your toes, monkeys play and the African fish eagle's cry can be heard at sunset. Traditionally dug-out canoes are still plentiful and one of the thrills of paddling here is to encounter one of these ancient craft on the horizon: you in your roto-molded, state-of-the-art touring kayak, the ancient paddler in a hand-carved, hollowed-out blasa tree or the like. Islands such as Dumba and Domwe offer destinations to set your kayak's course on. Along the way catch a catfish or sample home baked bread from a nearby village's clay oven. Grade 3-5. Zanizbar, Mafia Island and Mauritius Kayaking Sea Tour OptionsMauritius is reinventing itself and starting to present more choices to independent travelers. Almost surrounded by a coral reef, Mauritius offers over 100 kms of water navigable by kayak, protected inside the reef. The Ile d'Ambre route takes you among the mangroves teeming with birdlife to the sandy beach of Bernache Islad. From Baie du Tombeau you can paddle up the estuary to Balaclava's protected coral sanctuary. Other islands to visit include the ancient Spice Islands, Zanzibar and Pemba off the coast of Tanzania. Remote Mafia Island to the south probably offers the most affordable and ultimate kayaking sea tour adventure to those seeking to escape the throng. Grades 3-5. Intrigued?
