Robben Island would be one major place to visit. The home of Mandela for most of his 26 years in prison, Robben Island is now a museum. Former political prisoners in Robben Island give the tours. They last about 4 hours and entail a ferry ride out to the island. A ride that gives you great views of Cape Town and Table Mountain.
If you are want to see where Mandela's personal history began, you should visit Mandela’s ancestral home in South Africa’s rural Transkei region. It is part of South Africa’s Eastern Cape province. Though fairly remote, it is accessible. Especially if you do the Garden Route and start or end it in Port Elizabeth. Qunu is the village where Mandela was born and it now has a museum as well.
