It is set in a desert-like landscape of a huge salt pan with surrounding mopane woodland. Though it is dry and flat, the animals love it. There are 114 species of mammals and 340 birds species, as well as Africa's smallest animal, the Damara dik-dik and black-maned lions. At the start of the summer rainy season, thousands of zebras, wildebeest and giraffe come to the waterholes. It is also an important breeding ground for flamingos. How to get there: Air Namibia flies to Mokuti Lodge airstrip from Windhoek - just outside Lindequist gate. Tsumeb has the nearest commercial airport; also a bus and rail depot; car rental is possible in Tsumeb. Two main entries are Von Lindequist (closest to Namutoni) - 450km (279 miles) from Windhoek, west of Tsumeb and Andersson (closest to Okaukuejo) north of Outjo If you drive, you need at least three days to make the visit to Etosha worthwhile. Mamili National Park• Namibia's version of the Okavango Delta • Elephants, lion, buffalo, giraffe, rare sitatunga and red lechwe, crocodile and hippo, puku, spotted-necked otters • Remote, beautiful and utterly wild (only visitors with 4x4 can use the roads) • 430 bird species This popular attraction is at its most impressive in August when the champagne-colored water is at its deepest. Most of the young are born between November and March when the vegetation is lush. Size of reserve: 320km² or 124 sq. mi.
